Descriptive Epidemiology of Brain and Central Nervous System Tumours: Results from Iran National Cancer Registry, 2010-2014

Abstract: Background. Central nervous system (CNS) tumours account for only 1-2% of cancer incidence but are a major reason for mortality and morbidity due to malignancies. Recent studies show an increase in the rate of CNS tumours worldwide, especially in developing countries. Moreover, there is significant heterogeneity in epidemiological patterns worldwide. This study is aimed at representing nationwide epidemiology of CNS tumours in Iran. Methods. Iran National Cancer Registry 2010-2014 data were reviewed for CNS tu… Show more

“…The Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS) and other institutions worldwide have conducted detailed statistical and prognostic analyses on the new cases of primary CNS tumors in the Europe, America, and few countries in the rest of the world, providing detailed and credible reference data for a better understanding of CNS tumors [2,[6][7][8]. However, studies analyzing the incidence rate, and characteristics of CNS tumors reported in China are limited [9][10][11][12].…”

“…On the other hand, in a recent study published by Salimi et al in 2020, they also have reported an increasing trend of overall CNS tumors (21). However they have reported of all kind of the CNS tumors while we are reporting of just the malignant brain tumors.…”

“…Regarding the reason why such increase in trends and incidence rates of the tumors have occurred, some research suggest the advances in diagnosis and risk factor augmentation (15,21). We believe that since at least 20 years ago, Computed Tomography which is quite capable of diagnosing brain tumors has been always available at our center, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences as the referral center for the southwest part of the Iran; so, that could not be the reason underlying the upward trend of such tumors.…”

“…Previous studies have reported epidemiological characteristics of CNS cancers in Iran and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. However, lack of subnational or national focus on Iran, 2 , 13 , 14 absence of rigorous data sources, and being relatively outdated for the present time 15 , 16 prompt the need for up‐to‐date studies in this regard.…”
