Descriptive norms and expectancies as mediators of a brief motivational intervention for mandated college students receiving stepped care for alcohol use.

Abstract: Background and Aims Stepped care approaches for mandated college students provide individual Brief Motivational Interventions (BMI) only for individuals who do not respond to an initial, low-intensity level of treatment such as Brief Advice (BA). However, how BMIs facilitate change in this higher-risk group of mandated students remains unclear. Perceived descriptive norms and alcohol-related expectancies are the most commonly examined mediators of BMI efficacy, but have yet to be examined in the context of ste… Show more

“…Our findings were parallel to the degrees of overestimating misperceptions regarding perceived peer use of alcohol and peer attitudes towards alcohol use among university and college students in the other six European countries that collaborated for project SNIPE 21 . Similar overestimations were also found in studies conducted among university students 13,17,22,27,31 in other countries. These findings are in favor of the appropriateness of social norms approach for intervention, prevention, and improvement of alcoholrelated problems among university students.…”

“…And just as with situated interventions, remote initiatives attempted to communicate normative information in ways that are different from the usual group's rates of behavior and opinion. For example, some authors used face-to-face interaction of experimenters with participants to discuss normative information [19,90,91], while others used videos with real-life stories [92]. Also, in a similar way to situated interventions, studies very often complemented this with the same type of non-normative relevant information (e.g.…”
