Desert endophytic fungi improve reproductive, morphological, biochemical, yield and fruit quality characteristics of tomato under drought stress

Abstract: PurposeCrops are increasingly affected by drought; hence, the current study explored the potential role of three desert endophytic fungi, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus terreus and Talaromyces variabilis, in conferring drought tolerance in tomato plants.Design/methodology/approachPreserved endophytic fungi from a Rhazya stricta desert plant were adopted to obtain the required fungal treatment; tomatoes received fungal treatments directly in plastic trays and subsequently in pots. Drought was applied using … Show more

“…Abiotic stresses are known to reduce the pollen viability of tomatoes and other crops. Viable pollen serves as a crucial indicator, reflecting the ability of a plant to navigate a series of flowering events encompassing pollination, fertilization, and seed and fruit development (Halo et al 2023). Heat stress, as described by Borghi and Fernie (2020), adversely affects anthers and pollen, leading to a significant reduction in fruit set.…”

“…It is well-established that abiotic stresses reduce the pollen viability of tomatoes and other crops. Viable pollen is an important indicator that measures a plant's ability to experience a series of flowering events encompassing pollination, fertilization, and seed and fruit development (Halo et al 2023). Borghi and Fernie (2020) stated that anther and pollen are adversely affected by heat stress, resulting in failure of sexual reproduction and significantly reduced fruit sets.…”

“…However, the effective use of fungal endophytes as BCAs requires a comprehensive understanding of the endophyte-host relationship, endophyte-pathogen interactions, and the influence of environmental factors on these dynamics [17,18]. The nature of the endophyte-host relationship may vary across tomato cultivars, highlighting the importance of considering host specificity in endophyte selection for biocontrol purposes [19]. Furthermore, the adaptability of endophytes to the edaphoclimatic conditions of the application site compared to those of their isolation is crucial [20].…”
