Design and Analysis of a Novel Lightweight Translator Permanent Magnet Linear Generator for Oceanic Wave Energy Conversion

Abstract: At present, most of the linear generators contain a heavy translator for harvesting wave power from the ocean into electrical power. As the translator is connected to the buoy, the buoy dynamic performance is reduced by the large mass and as a result low velocity of the translator would degrade the electricity generation of the linear generator. This problem has been minimized by the new design in this paper, where the translator is clipped off at first and split into two separate portions to minimize its weig… Show more

“…Lower power density and large volume are common problems for WEC. A tubular-shaped DDLG is designed in [15] to achieve high power density, whereas the flat type NdFeB PM-based DDLG is analysed and simulated in [16] where the translator weight is minimised by a split translator with secondary/supporting stator.…”

“…During recent decades, the annual estimated warming rate of our planet has been more than 0.02 • C [1,2]. However, to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide, scientists have been investigating for many years alternative ways to generate electrical power rather than using conventional fuels [3]. Electricity generation from the renewable energy sources (RESs) are the possible…”

“…Most of the research papers focus on the improvement [9] of the electrical power generation from OWE in various ways. A lightweight translator has been proposed in [10] to improve the dynamics of the linear generator. Another PMLG has been proposed in [11] to minimize the overall system mass.…”
