SummaryThis paper proposes a multi‐loads capacitive power transfer (CPT) system based on a single relay plate for railway monitoring systems. The proposed system can supply power wirelessly to the monitoring system on the trackside and train carriages simultaneously to eliminate traditional power cables connection and prevent frequent battery replacement. Unlike the traditional multiple loads CPT systems, the proposed system uses only one relay plate, which is more stable and uncomplicated considering the coupler installation space and moving dynamically in the railway system. The proposed system adopts a CL‐LCLC‐CL compensation network to achieve a load‐independent output. The limitation of the charging load quantity is given in detail considering the coupler voltage stress distribution. An experimental prototype with three loads is also built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system. Experimental results show that the proposed system achieves wireless power transfer to multiple loads simultaneously with two loads on the receiver and one on the repeater side. The load‐independent property is also achieved when two loads are removed. The maximum experimental efficiency is about 87.13%.

Capacitive power transfer (CPT) is a near-field wireless power transfer (WPT) technology that has attracted attention in different charging applications. By utilizing electric fields, CPT gives charging systems advantages in terms of cost, weight, flexibility, and mobility. This paper surveys a number of empirical published works in a period between 2015 and 2023. Additionally, it discusses theoretical and practical design considerations of a CPT system to understand and improve the technology and its applications. The paper studies the one-and two-port measuring approaches using vector network analyzers to determine the coupling parameters and compares the measurements to the simulated values using COMSOL Multiphysics © . The two-port approach gives more accurate results than the one-port approach. The paper designs and tests a 13.56 MHz CPT system using the two-port measurement results. The system transfers 100 W at 87.4% efficiency and 30 mm separation distance. Lastly, the paper discusses the design limitations and challenges of the CPT systems, aiming to emphasize the design obstacles that can drive the advancement of the CPT systems for wireless charging applications.INDEX TERMS Wireless power transmission, capacitive power transfer, couplings, VNA, two-port.

In the operation of dynamic capacitive power transfer (DCPT) systems, time-varying parameters can significantly impact the stability of the system’s output voltage. Achieving precise regulation of system through closed-loop controller becomes important. This paper presents a control method for DCPT systems based on partial power processing (PPP) technique. It achieves output voltage stability under various disturbances by processing only a fraction of the power. Firstly, this paper outlines the architecture of the PPP-based DCPT system and conducts system modeling. Based on the model, the influence of varying input voltage, coupling parameters, and load resistance on the open-loop output characteristics of the system is analyzed. Furthermore, the relationship between the duty cycle of the Boost converter, power ratio of the main/auxiliary channels, and output voltage is investigated after the controller's intervention. This analysis clarifies the control ability to regulate the output voltage. A 350W DCPT experimental prototype is established, demonstrating stable control of the system's output voltage at 100 V despite disturbances such as load variations within the range of 30-100 Ω, movement of the receiver between adjacent transmitting segments, and input voltage fluctuations of ±10%. When compared to a DCPT system with a cascaded DC-DC converter, the system’s efficiency is also improved by 0.7%~2.1% under different load conditions.
