Design and Analysis of Aerial-Terrestrial Network: A Joint Solution for Coverage and Rate

Abstract: The exploitation of aerial base stations (A-BSs) in conjunction with terrestrial base stations (T-BSs) is envisioned as a promising solution to provide connectivity to devices and user-equipment (UE) in crowded situations (viz. in the sports event) and emergency situations (viz. in the disaster management). However, the use of A-BSs with existing terrestrial networks intensifies the inter-cell interference (ICI) to the devices and UEs, therefore leading to a degraded signal-to-interference-ratio (SIR). This pa… Show more

“…Large scale path loss model -We consider both the line of sight (LoS) and non line of sight (NLoS) links from the ABSs. We therefore adopt the probability of the LoS, P L , between a terrestrial transmitter and user at specified elevations [13] as defined by International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and given in (1). Consequently, the probability of NLoS, P N = 1 − P L .…”

“…They show that the decoupled uplink and downlink give better coverage and spectral efficiency than the non-decoupled access. The coverage probability of an integrated radio access technology (RAT) aerial-terrestrial network that uses mmWave and microwaves is presented in [5]. They show that both the coverage probability and rate are improved for the integrated network.…”

“…Lemma 1: The PDFs of the distance between a typical user and the closest MBS, SBS, LoS ABS and NLoS ABS denoted f M (x), f S (x), f L (x) and f N (x) respectively for x ≥ 0 are given in (5) for i ∈ {M, S} and (6) for j ∈ {L, N }. P j (x) ∈ {P L (x), P N (x)}.…”
