Design and analysis of hybrid electric vehicle powertrain configurations considering energy transformation

Abstract: Summary In order to enhance the fuel economy of hybrid electric vehicles, this paper proposes a novel method for the design and analysis of hybrid electric vehicle powertrain configurations. Initially, by analyzing the energy transformation of hybrid electric vehicle, the single‐mode configurations are designed by considering the engine efficiency, the conversion energy loss, and the mechanical transmission efficiency, respectively. Then, two novel multimode configurations with single electric machine are obta… Show more

“…Their related basing idea and principles consist of providing the EV by a hybrid charging system, which contains an ICE engine and an electrical generator. 10,11 According to these works, the battery can be charged even when the car is in motion. Conversely, the problem is always attached to the internal system complexity and the vehicle high prices.…”

“…4 The transmission of the PHEV, as the core of the powertrain, can allocate the power of the motor and the engine according to demand, thus affecting the fuel economy of the vehicle. In order to take advantage of the PHEV for fuel economy, automatic transmission (AT), automatic mechanical transmission (AMT), and dual clutch transmission (DCT) technologies have been applied to hybrid transmission systems, [5][6][7] and most of them usually have 6-8 gear ratios, which not only significantly restrict the improvement of fuel economy 8 but also create shock during gear shift. In contrast to them, an infinite number of gear ratios can be provided by CVT within the limits of the mechanism, so there is a chance to achieve the best match between the working points of the engine and the motor.…”
