Design and analysis of waste heat recovery from residential air conditioning units for cooling and pure water production

Abstract: The present article reports on the analysis of waste heat and condensate recovery from residential air conditioning (AC) units in different climatic regions in Saudi Arabia. Simulation results obtained using a transient dynamic model show that significant amounts of waste heat and water condensate are rejected to the environment in hot and humid climate regions. A multi-generation system for simultaneous cooling and pure water production using condensate and waste heat recovery is designed and implemented in T… Show more

“…If not properly managed, it is released into the environment, contributing to global warming. The literature research has identified several areas of use for waste heat, including district heating systems [2,3,67], greenhouses [4], industrial processes and process heating [3], thermal energy storage [5,6], seawater desalination [7][8][9][10], cooling systems and cold storage [10], agriculture and aquaculture [3], direct conversion of thermal energy into electrical current [11], and generating electricity (ORC) [12,13]. This text will discuss recent studies on some important issues related to these areas.…”

“…Energy management and control of the whole multi-generation system are very important for the development of an efficient system [12]. Design and analysis of a multi-generation system for simultaneous cooling and pure water production using condensate and waste heat recovery is reported in [13]. A refrigerant to water de-superheater is introduced after the compressor to recover energy from the high temperature superheated refrigerant gas.…”

“…The proposed system shows a good potential to supply cooling and pure water requirements in hot and humid climates. The annual comparison of the performance of the combined cooling and pure water production system reported in [13] shows that, as compared to the basic AC system for typical weather conditions of selected cities in Saudi Arabia, the enhancement in the value of monthly averaged coefficient of performance of the combined system with continuous cooling of desalination unit is higher than 6.6%.…”
