Design and assembly of the globus-m tokamak magnets

Abstract

Globus-M spherical tokamak was constructed at A. F. Ioffe Institute, St.Petersburg in 1998 [l]. The Globus-M tokamak peculiarity is its small aspect ratio plasma properties. At the same time the low aspect ratio of the machine requires implementation of modern technologies for the manufacture of critical components such as the vacuum vessel and the tokamak central post (toroidal field (TF) coils, central rod and central solenoid assembled as one column).The sixteen one-turn TF coils are used as a support for nine pairs of poloidal field (PF) coils which are capable to produce plasma equilibrium magnetic configurations with the double X-point and to sustain the plasma vertical and horizontal positions by means of the feedback control systems. The vacuum vessel and the magnets are coupled mechanically. The construction of the tokamak magnets provides a simple access to the vacuum in-vessel elements through two equatorial ports of diameter 400 mm. The tokamak has been assembled a t the Northern Plant in St.Petersburg.The design and sequence of the machine assembly with 3D drawings of the basic stages are presented.
