Design and characterization of biodegradable multi layered electrospun nanofibers for corneal tissue engineering applications

Abstract: Tissue engineering is one of the most promising areas for treatment of various ophthalmic diseases particularly for patients who suffer from limbal stem cell deficiency and this is due to the lack of existence of appropriate matrix for stem cell regeneration. The aim of this research project is to design and fabricate triple layered electrospun nanofibers as a suitable corneal tissue engineering scaffold and the objective is to investigate and perform various in vitro tests to find the most optimum and suitabl… Show more

“…EnSCs benefits from easily accessibility, high‐proliferation rate, angiogenesis induction, immune‐modulatory properties, and stable karyotype at high‐passage number 22,33 . Successful differentiation of these cells toward β‐cells has been reported using differentiation media containing activin A 3,34 …”

“…Collagen is a natural polymer in medical application due to high biocompatibility, suitable biodegradability, and low immunogenicity for cell encapsulation [ 27 ]. Collagen fibrils have some cell-binding sites, such as Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence, which interact and connect to cells.…”

“…43,69 Electrospinning usually involves polymer solutions, which are placed in a syringe connected to a needle (also known as a spinneret), and a voltage is supplied. 83 The anode is connected to the needle tip, while the cathode is attached to a collector plate, maintaining a fixed voltage between them, applying a voltage between the two components. Pumping of the solution from the needle tip occurs at a specific flow rate, creating fibers from the solution in the syringe.…”
