Design and Construction of the Mersey Gateway Bridge

<p>Bangladesh lies on the river delta formed as the Padma River enters the Bay of Bengal. Much of the country sits just above the water level and the topography is characterised by a vast network of rivers, some of which are several kilometres wide. In recent decades, the country has seen the need for development of its transport infrastructure to support its economic growth. A major challenge has been the design and construction of river crossings, which encounter deep scour channels and poor ground in these rivers. COWI has developed designs for a number of major bridge crossings in the south and east of Bangladesh. Along with this, COWI has developed designs for platforms to support high voltage transmission line towers, which adopt the same engineering approach as applied to bridges.</p>

<p>The state of development of FE-programs in practical design of reinforced concrete structures has not yet advanced to such a level that the design and verification of concrete bridges can be carried out solely on the basis of FE-programs. For this reason the approach viaduct substructure of the Mersey Gateway Bridge located in Northwest England was designed by applying plasticity methods, which yielded a cost-effective and intuitive design. The methods which included both lower bound and upper bound solutions, were found to be an effective design tool and resulted in both simple and economical reinforcement designs. This paper presents how these methods have been applied within the Eurocode 2 framework.</p>

Abstract: <p> Mersey Gateway Bridge is a 2.25km long major estuary crossing under construction in the UK. It is being built as part of a concession agreement to increase capacity across the upper Mersey Estuary. The bridge features a 1km long three tower cable stayed bridge.</p>
