Design and Control Optimisation of a Novel Bypass-embedded Multilevel Multicell Inverter for Hybrid Electric Vehicle Drives

Abstract: A novel bypass-embedded multilevel multicell inverter is proposed with manipulation of bidirectional flow of currents targeting electric motor drives and regenerative braking (battery recharging) for hybrid electric vehicles. To balance switching losses, maximise DC supply utilisations, balance the state of charge, and minimise total harmonic distortions, the inverter control method is optimised by incorporating phase disposition PWM with variable carrier frequency, third harmonic injection, as well as carrier… Show more

“…In this context, LS-PWM is suitable for its application in multilevel converter topologies because it ensures low harmonic distortion [32][33][34] and is simple on its implementation structure respect to space-vector methods. For the proposed inverter topology, a LS-PWM technique has been implemented, hence the output voltage is synthesized as follows [11]:…”

“…The AC current injection using power converters for AC system (grid tied inverter) is an well established technology where the power flows unidirectionally and has a significant voltage variation corresponding to current [14,15]. The unidirectional power flow of a single phase inverter is depicted in Figure 1a.…”
