Design and development of a cross-cultural disposition inventory

Abstract: Advances in technology have increased the likelihood that engineers will have to work in a global, culturally diverse setting. Many schools of engineering are currently revising their curricula to help students to develop cultural competence. However, our ability to measure cultural dispositions can be a challenge. The purpose of this project was to develop and test an instrument that measures the various aspects of cultural disposition. The results of the validation process verified that the hypothesised mode… Show more

“…As suggested by the corpus analysis, a large proportion of studies link culture with nationality, with approximately half (15/31) of the papers taking an essentialist culture-as-given stance. These papers address the topic of culture, with the discussion focusing on educational projects in which participants were tasked to collaborate with people from other countries either directly (Arzberger et al, 2010;Jesiek, Haller, & Thompson, 2014;Mehalik, Lovell, & Shuman, 2008;Meunier, Dutto, Guillet, & Michau, 2007) or in geographically distributed virtual teams (Davies, Zaugg, & Tateishi, 2014;Gonzalez, Guerra-Zubiaga, Orta, & Contero, 2008;May, Wold, & Moore, 2015;McNair, Paretti, & Kakar, 2008;Zaugg & Davies, 2013). These authors, together with Downey et al (2006), LaFave et al (2015, Friesen and Ingram (2013), Hazelton, Malone, andGardner (2009), andSoibelman et al (2011), focus on the ability of graduates or professional engineers to work with others who have been raised or educated in "foreign" cultures (Swearengen, Barnes, Coe, Reinhardt, & Subramanian, 2002), countries, or language backgrounds.…”

“…Also included in the survey was a 15-item scale assessing cultural dispositions, which was developed by researchers at Brigham Young University. 18,19 The items for the first-year and senior versions of the survey were nearly identical, with appropriate changes made to verb tense based on time of study and completed activities. On the senior version of the survey, students were asked to reflect on their experiences while at [the authors' institution].…”

“…The Cultural Dispositions Index (CDI) 18,19 contains 15 items for which students were asked to rate their level of agreement using a scale from Strongly Disagree (scored as 1) to Strongly Agree (scored as 5). Scale scores were calculated by summing the item scores.…”

“…The second phase included the development of educational materials to further facilitate the use of GV teams. This included a comprehensive list of global competencies [ 11 ], the creation of a cultural disposition index [ 12 ] to evaluate student's disposition towards working on cross-cultural projects, and a set of 10 lessons to help engineering students function better on GV teams (please see http://pgvt.groups.et.byu.net). The final phase of the study sought to compare the educational experience of GV teams with that of traditional study abroad programs.…”
