Design and development of laser speckle reduction device using waveguide diffuser and pyramidal cavity for projection imaging

Abstract: We report the design and development of an efficient speckle reduction device for projection imaging. The device is composed of a combination of a rod-shaped waveguide diffuser and a reflective pyramidal cavity. The simulation results reveal that the pyramidal cavity with waveguide diffuser is a highly efficient light guide comparable to the other conventional light guides. Further, the device was developed and tested experimentally on the basis of speckle contrast and image quality for both the microscopic an… Show more

“…In addition, the laser beams are redirected along the length of the cylindrical diffusers so that heating and burning of the phosphor layer is avoided. This design is very efficient compared to other light guide shapes or light reflectors, as demonstrated [18]. Pyramids exhibit unique properties such as light concentration and multiple resonance for the electromagnetic radiation [18,19].…”

“…Therefore, traditional optical metrology is closely linked to image processing technology. Processing the fringe/speckle images allows us to extract the necessary physical quantities measured from the original captured images [4,5]. “…On the other hand, the advances in high-efficiency lasers (particularly yellow/amber/orange LDs) and sophisticated design of optical, electronic and heat-sink systems may speed up the development of CM-LD white lighting. However, for both schemes there is a lack of thorough evaluation of irradiation performances to achieve simultaneously speckle suppression, 13,14,15 color mixing, 16,17 uniform illumination, 18 high LER, and high CRI in a compact laser luminaire package. Furthermore, the solid-state lighting community and VLC community focus on different figures of merit, lacking synergy to achieve both high-performance white lighting and high communication rate.…”
