Design and Development of the WR-21 Intercooled Recuperated (ICR) Marine Gas Turbine

Abstract: The U.S. Navy is developing an Intercooled Recuperated (ICR) marine gas turbine, designated the WR-21, for propulsion of future surface ships. The objectives of this development program and the key technical requirements are summarized. The design of the WR-21 is described in considerable detail. Meeting all the design requirements for performance, space, weight, reliability, maintainability, and life has been challenging. Numerous design tradeoffs and iterations have been performed to optimize the design with… Show more

“…As a kind of effective approach to sharply improve the overall performance of gas turbine, intercooled (IC) cycle or intercooled regenerated (ICR) cycle attracts more and more attentions due to their great potentials in decreasing the power consumption of high-pressure compressor. 1,2 In recent years, the successful application or experiment of IC industrial gas turbine (LMS100) 3 and ICR marine gas turbine (WR-21) 4 has verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the above two cycle technologies.…”

“…In industrial gas turbine industry, fuel economy can be achieved by introducing a recuperator in the baseline engine, Horlock, (2003). This device recovers waste energy from the gas turbine exhaust, preheating the air entering the combustion chamber, improving cycle efficiency and reducing fuel consumption, Shepard et al (1994). The development of the Rolls Royce WR-21 engine for marine applications is based on this concept, Colin (2003).…”

“…In practice, Rolls-Royce intercooled recuperated marine model WR21 [7] [8] whose SFC curve illustrated in Figure 2 is showing significant fuel saving capability when compared with other existing cycle options. Its cycle layout incorporates intercooling and heat exchange for the purpose of improving part-load performance at low power demand operations.…”
