The medical manufacturing industry is currently one of the sectors with great potential growth in Malaysia, which offers numerous job opportunities to local and foreign workers. The growing proportion of workers in this industry means that a large number of workers are potentially exposed to ergonomic risk factors at the workplace, which may consequently affect their health. Thus, this study was carried out is to investigate the ergonomic risk factors and the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among male workers in a medical manufacturing company in northern Malaysia. Eight industrial workers (n = 8) were recruited from two Plastic Technology (PT) departments to participate in this study. Observations were made by recording the participants performing two tasks (manual lifting of containers and bags of chemicals) using a video camera at the PT1 and PT3 departments. The participants’ personal information and their job-related characteristics were first collected using a demographic questionnaire. Next, the Cornell Musculoskeletal and Hand Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ) was used to evaluate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among workers while Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC) were used to assess the most common risk factors during the lifting operations. The results showed that the highest prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among the male workers at the medical manufacturing company was at the lower back (83.17%), upper back (4.38%), right shoulder (3.49%), and left shoulder (3.49%). Based on the results of the MAC, 100% of the participants were at high risk of injury from postures in the vertical lift zones, torso twisting, and sideways bending. In addition, 87.5 and 62.5% of the participants were at high risk of injury based on their hand distance from the lower back and grip on the load, respectively. The results of this study can serve as a guideline to implement interventional ergonomics programmes at the workplace and improve the musculoskeletal health of workers in the medical manufacturing industry in Malaysia.

Introducción: Debido a los avances en tecnología y a la preocupación por mejorar las condiciones laborales de los trabajadores, se han desarrollado métodos de evaluación observacionales (MEO) para la evaluación del riesgo biomecánico (ERB) asociado a desordenes musculoesqueléticos (DME), que han sido empleados en investigaciones publicadas durante los años 2014 - 2019. Sin embargo, la existencia de nuevos métodos, así como la frecuencia y forma de uso de los ya reconocidos, es una información que está diseminada y no es de fácil acceso para los profesionales interesados en el tema. Esta investigación busca compilar lo reportado sobre esta temática para facilitar su consulta y evidenciar las tendencias y vacíos en torno a los MEO.Objetivo: Realizar una revisión bibliográfica de la literatura científica publicada entre 2014-2019, donde se evidencie el uso de los MEO para ERB de DME en miembros superiores (MMSS) en trabajadores.Métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda de artículos que evidenciaran el uso de MEO, publicados en idioma inglés en Medline, ScienceDirect y Scopus desde el 08/03/19 hasta el 15/06/19.Resultados: Aplicados los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, se encontró el uso de ocho MEO para el estudio de DME de MMSS, de los cuales RULA, STRAIN INDEX, TLV for HAL y Check list OCRA, fueron los más reportados.Conclusión: Los MEO continúan siendo altamente reportados siendo pocos los nuevos métodos encontrados. Se evidencia la necesidad de mayores publicaciones en Colombia y América latina.

The objective of this study was to reveal RULA method applications in terms of the knowledge, country, year and journal categories. The search was performed using the “Web of Science Core Collection”. The period from 1993 to April 2019 was selected. Eight hundred nine results were obtained, of which 226 were used. The largest number of publications was determined to be in the fields of industry and health and social assistance, which coincides with the OWAS and Standardized Nordic Questionnaire methods. By country, the USA stands out for its greater number of research studies and categories that are encompassed. By date, 2016 was the year when more studies were carried out, again coinciding with the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire. By journal, “Work—A Journal of Prevention Assessment and Rehabilitation” is highlighted, as it is for the REBA method as well. It was concluded that RULA can be applied to workers in different fields, usually in combination with other methods, while technological advancement provides benefits for its application.
