Background Many early signs of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) developed during the first thirty days after discharge remain inadequately recognized by patients. Hence, it is important to use interactive technologies for patient support in these times. It helps to diminish unnecessary exposure and in-person outpatient visits. Therefore, this study aims to develop a follow-up system for remote monitoring of SSIs in abdominal surgeries. Material and methods This pilot study was carried out in two phases including development and pilot test of the system. First, the main requirements of the system were extracted through a literature review and exploration of the specific needs of abdominal surgery patients in the post-discharge period. Next extracted data was validated according to the agreement level of 30 clinical experts by the Delphi method. After confirming the conceptual model and the primary prototype, the system was designed. In the pilot test phase, the usability of the system was qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated by the participation of patients and clinicians. Results The general architecture of the system consists of a mobile application as a patient portal and a web-based platform for patient remote monitoring and 30-day follow-up by the healthcare provider. Application has a wide range of functionalities including collecting surgery-related documents, and regular assessment of self-reported symptoms via systematic tele-visits based on predetermined indexes and wound images. The risk-based models embedded in the database included a minimum set with 13 rules derived from the incidence, frequency, and severity of SSI-related symptoms. Accordingly, alerts were generated and displayed via notifications and flagged items on clinicians’ dashboards. In the pilot test phase, out of five scheduled tele-visits, 11 (of 13) patients (85%), completed at least two visits. The nurse-centered support was very helpful in the recovery stage. Finally, the result of a pilot usability evaluation showed users’ satisfaction and willingness to use the system. Conclusion Implementing a telemonitoring system is potentially feasible and acceptable. Applying this system as part of routine postoperative care management can provide positive effects and outcomes, especially in the era of coronavirus disease when more willingness to telecare service is considered.

Introduction: Today, the introduction of smartphones into the healthcare field has led to rapid growth in application development; provided many important tasks such as maintaining health and access to information, communications and counseling, referral and data collection, management and supervision of patients; and facilitated patient self-care and participation.Material and Methods: In order to design a mobile-based self-care application, the designing purpose was first defined and then related literature was reviewed and different kinds of software designed in this field were identified. Using the specified information elements, UML diagrams (Use-Case, Sequence, and Activity) were plotted by Visual Paradigm Enterprise 8 software.In fact, a feasibility assessment was carried out, based on which the application prototype was developed and provided to 10 patients to achieve their opinions. In the next step, the final application components were determined based on user feedback and experts approval. In the final step, Quiz Satisfaction Survey Questionnaire v.7.0 was used to assess users' satisfaction.Results: Based on user questions and answers, and answers available in the database, the application offers appropriate therapies that emphasize the presence of patients in health centers.Conclusion: The presented application helps with providing rapid information and awareness about different aspects of the disease.

INTRODUCTION: The virtual reality-based (VR) game can be considered as a new approach to education and to enhance the skills of health-care students. AIMS: The purposes of this research were to design a VR game and to apply it to teach physiotherapy in neurological diseases. METHODOLOGY: In this study, at first, a VR game was designed for upper limb rehabilitation in brain-injured patients based on the literature and the opinions of physiotherapy experts and game designers. Then, the designed game was used for teaching physiotherapy in neurological diseases. Thereafter, the opinions of 31 undergraduate students about the teaching session were evaluated by two anonymous questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics through SPSS (version 19). RESULTS: The VR game developed under expert supervision. The evaluation showed that the median score for students’ perception of learning was 3.11. The median scores of questions related to the “facilitating level of virtual reality” and “student satisfaction” were 8.66 and 9, respectively. The analysis of students’ responses to open-ended questions highlighted the therapeutic aspect of the game compared to its educational aspect. CONCLUSIONS: Application of VR games in education can enhance the students’ perception of learning. Furthermore, it can provide a better understanding of physiotherapy in patients with neurological diseases as well as the satisfaction of students. However, the survey indicated that the good results of this teaching method are due to the use of VR for guiding the patient's movements.
