Design and Evaluation of Hybrid Composite Plates for Ballistic Protection: Experimental and Numerical Investigations

Abstract: In this paper, hybrid composite plates for ballistic protection were investigated experimentally and numerically, with a target to reduce the weight of currently used body armor inserts and, at the same time, satisfy the requirements of the National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) ballistic protection standards. The current study has three phases to improve the ballistic plate’s energy absorption capability. The first phase is devoted to studying the effect of the material types, including three different fibers:… Show more

“…In the next step, the sophisticated models developed [22][23][24][25][26][27] will be employed to numerically investigate the failure behavior further of the proposed joining system under different loading conditions. Further research activities in this area would regard the investigation of the joining system under fatigue loadings, see [28][29][30][31], crushing forces, see [32][33][34], as well as the durability of the joining system.…”

“…Defense/Ballistic Applications. For ballistic and bulletproof applications, composites are reinforced with highperformance fibres mainly synthetic fibre because of their superior strength and modulus, high heat resistance, and excellent ability to absorb the kinetic energy of the projectile [217]. Presently, polymer composites based on aramid fibre, UHMWPE, and PBO fibres have produced acceptable results for bulletproof and ballistic applications [218].…”

“…This represents a considerable increase in the armor weight, thickness, and stiffness of the final gear. In other words, the mobility of the user is still an issue for engineers and researchers [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. Regarding this problem of the excessive number of layers, an interesting solution was created in the early 2000s.…”
