Design and experimental validation of dual‐band circularly polarised horn filtenna

Abstract: A simple and cheap solution is proposed to transform a wideband and linearly polarised horn antenna in a dual-band circularly polarised horn filtenna. The filtering and polarisation transformation capabilities are achieved by inserting inside the throat of the horn a complementary electrically small resonator etched on a thin metallic sheet. In this way, the overall structure is well matched in two frequency ranges (13-14 and 16.4-17 GHz) and radiates left-handed and right-handed circularly polarised fields in… Show more

“…Similar to the approach of ref. , this dual band circular polarized horn filtenna presented by Barbuto et al in 2017 helped to combat the weather and multipath effects in satellite communication. The filter is realized by etching two pairs of meander line slots of different dimensions, operating at two different frequencies on a thin metallic sheet with a 90 0 phase shift between them.…”

“…System performance will be deteriorated due to introduced mutual couplings between bands when these frequency bands are close to each other. Hence, combination of antennas and filters into one device is extensively researched in recent years . Furthermore, large roll‐off level is required for filtering antenna design.…”

“…However, it will cause extra material loss and spatial consumption. Dual‐band filtering antenna with orthogonal polarization is an alternative solution, and related applications have been reported in Reference . In conclusion, multifunctional components especially such as dual‐band filtering antenna attract more and more attention in wireless communication system designing.…”

“…Consequently, various kinds of CP antennas have been presented in the literature, and the most representative schemes include helix antennas, 7 microstrip patches, 8,9 slot antennas, 10 cross dipoles, 11 magnetic-electric dipoles, 12 and horn antennas. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] For example, a slotted hollow ring element is presented for Ku-band high-efficiency CP reflectarray. 9 And an increasing number of reported works used metamaterial-based multifunctional devices to achieve the polarization conversion from a linear polarization wave to circular polarization wave.…”

“…However, with the rapid development of wireless communication technique, circularly polarized (CP) antennas are widely used in areas such as global positioning system, navigational systems, military‐phased array radars, and satellite communication due to the robustness to multipath distortion and immunity to polarization mismatch losses. Consequently, various kinds of CP antennas have been presented in the literature, and the most representative schemes include helix antennas, microstrip patches, slot antennas, cross dipoles, magnetic‐electric dipoles, and horn antennas …”
