Design and fabrication of an affordable polymer micromixer for medical and biomedical applications

Abstract: In this article, an affordable split‐and‐recombine polymer static micromixer and its fabrication process are described. The structure of the micromixer was designed to take advantage of the process capabilities of both ultraprecision micromachining and microinjection molding. This arrangement allows a considerably short machining time, high productivity, and flexibility as compared with many of the previous fabrication processes used in manufacturing of micromixers, for example, the cleanroom process. Moreover… Show more

“…The device consists of two parts, a static micromixer and a coaxial electrospray system. Microinjection molding was chosen to fabricate this static micromixer. , In order to reduce the cost and achieve mass production, two identical parts were designed for the static micromixer, and therefore, only one mold is needed for the device fabrication. For microinjection molding, all of the features were designed to be perpendicular to the bottom surface for simplicity.…”

“…A higher injection speed can help the PMMA melt flow into the cavity quickly to avoid rapid cooling in the delivery system. Although higher packing pressure and longer packing time lead to more material flowing into the cavity [ 27 ], excessive packing pressure may cause uneven distribution of density, resulting in variations in refraction index. Moreover, if the packing time is too long the gate will be frozen thus preventing material from flowing into the cavity.…”

“…The original design of the micromixer is shown in figure 1 [10]. Unlike some of the previous designs reported by others [6,7], in this design the splitting was realized by dividing the central channel into two subchannels, one leads to upper-right and the other leads to lower-left direction.…”

“…Besides the mixing performance, the material and manufacturing process for the micromixer also needs to be considered. Recently, a low-cost polymer SAR micromixer and its manufacturing processes have been developed by the authors [10]. The design of the micromixer in this paper was based on the same high precision and low-cost mass production process, which is the combination of ultraprecision micro machining and microinjection molding.…”
