Abstract-As Internet speed grows up and academic networks reach more users, engineering schools take interest in online laboratories as a mean to increase the spectrum of offered services and to reduce costs by sharing expensive lab equipments. In this perspective, online labs must comply both with the scientific and pedagogic requirements coming from the lab users (students, researchers, …) and with the requirements coming from the administrative and technical staff in charge to manage and deliver the lab services. In this paper we describe a system architecture based on both the classes of requirements and discuss the main results achieved implementing a prototype of the proposed architecture in a real academic scenario.

Traditionally, online control education labs are designed and implemented with the purpose of teaching on a specific topic: controller tuning, stability, etc. These tools usually have a monolithic design: there is a strong binding between the model and the control. Usually, there is a built-in controller that may have a set of modifiable parameters, but the controller itself cannot be changed. Also, it cannot be easily translated to other system, for example to compare the performance. In other words, the system subject of study is not very configurable, which unnecessarily constrains the possibilities of these tools. Though this approach may be adequate for some situations, it would be interesting to have more flexible and versatile online laboratories, for instance, in Master courses, where students are expected to design and test advanced control laws. This paper proposes a new paradigm to develop such tools. An element has been deployed and allows the dynamic execution of scripts written in different programming languages, such as Java, Javascript, or Matlab. The final aim is to provide students with a tool to promote an active participation in the practice, writing their own controller code and freely experimenting with the system. The paradigm is illustrated with some examples of these new generation online laboratories.

The use of remote laboratories has become a common technique in universities to provide educational services related to engineering. However, the development efforts of these laboratories have not been contemplated in a structured way, with no specific methodologies that allow the reuse of such laboratories or parts thereof. This problem of structured and methodological development is associated with a number of disadvantages which imply that the development of new labs or their integration with other services is a complex task. This paper shows how this goal can be achieved using RELATED (REmote LAboratories exTendED). It is shown the development model proposed by this methodology, as well as the services provided by this development framework. The article shows an example of application of this methodology, using a magnetic levitation system, which is prepared for "on-site" experiences. From this laboratory, and following specific methodological steps, is shown as is possible to reuse developed code and provide a set of remote experiments for the magnetic levitation system.
