Design and implementation of atmospheric multi-parameter sensor for UAV-based aerosol distribution detection

Abstract: Purpose In this paper, a light-weight, low-power atmospheric multi-parameter sensor (AMPS), which could be mounted on small flying platforms such as a tethered balloon, a quad-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a UAV helicopter, etc., is implemented and integrated to sample vertical distribution of aerosols with integrated parameters of aerosol particle concentration, temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric pressure. Design/methodology/approach The AMPS integrates three kinds of probes in an embedde… Show more

“…When the gyro is rotated, a small proof mass shifts as the angular velocity changes. Another integrated sensor is the barometric pressure sensor [17] that shows aerial robots' altitude data during the flight. A GPS sensor is used to stabilize the UAV.…”

“…Autonomous mobile robots navigate in diverse environmental conditions for performing multiple tasks (Murphy and Murphy, 2000;Gouveia and Choubey, 2016;Wang et al, 2016;Yu et al, 2017;Schoettle, 2017). To perform an efficient autonomous navigation of mobile robot, accurate perception of the environment is the foremost requirement.…”

“…The laser occupancy grid map relies on the sensor accuracy, which gets reduced when laser sensor is put into operation in the harsh environment (Akai et al, 2016;Fersch et al, 2016;Filgueira et al, 2017;Yu et al, 2017). To demonstrate the influence of harsh environmental conditions, various perquisite experiments had been carried out by simulating rain in the laboratory as explained below.…”

“…However, it is fixed on spot and difficult to move, with limitations on observation range and height. The second is tethered aerostat observation, with different sensors loaded on tethered balloons to measure vertical distribution of high-level contaminants [14][15][16][17][18]. However, a tethered aerostat cannot flexibly observe in a wide range.…”
