Belt conveyors (BCs), because of their high efficiency, are widely used for bulk material handling in the mining industry. However, due to the high level of conveyors’ energy consumption, the belt conveyor systems generate a large part of mining costs. Therefore, the current solutions mostly focus on implementing new management strategies, which find energy consumption as a key indicator in designing belt conveyor systems. Belt conveyor equipment selection, conveying systems, operation, applied mining technology are considered to be areas where improvement of belt conveyors’ energy efficiency may be achieved. Moreover, they can be used to implement novel standards for BC equipment and the proposal of defining new quality standards and creating BCs’ classification has been already outlined. The main idea of the paper is to compare the values of specific energy consumption (SEC) of BCs with regard to the inclination angle of a conveyor route which results from technological needs. The multiple regression is used to find a relationship between two basic independent variables – the volume of transported material and conveyor’s inclination angle – and a dependent variable (SEC). The procedure enables to determine the value of SEC which is required for lifting the material. Presented results prove that the value of SEC required for lifting the material is crucial for the interpretation of the SEC value when it comes to energy efficiency comparison.

Purpose. The development of analytical methods for calculating the parameters of a composite conveyor line using the models containing partial differential equations. Methodology. To calculate the parameters of the conveyor line with a constant speed of movement of subjects of labour, the apparatus of mathematical physics is used. findings. The solution is given in an analytic form that specifies the state parameters of the production line for a given technology position as a function of time. originality. The scientific novelty of the results is the improvement of PDE-models of production systems of a conveyor type. The method for calculating the parameters of conveyor production, consisting of two connecting conveyor lines with a constant speed of movement of subjects of labour is offered. The considered method for calculation of conveyor production can be extended in case of a system with an arbitrary number of connecting conveyor lines. Practical value. The practical significance lies in the fact that the proposed method for calculating the parameters of conveyor production can be used to design control systems for conveyor production with an arbitrary number of conveyor lines. An essential advantage of this method is that each conveyor line is described by a single partial differential equation, the solution to which is obtained analytically. Such a representation makes it possible to use solutions for predicting the state parameters of a production line.

According to the importance of the conveyor systems in various industrial and service lines, it is very desirable to make these systems as efficient as possible in their work. In this paper, the speed of a conveyor belt (which is in our study a part of an integrated training robotic system) is controlled using one of the artificial intelligence methods, which is the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). A visions sensor will be responsible for gathering information about the status of the conveyor belt and parts over it, where, according to this information, an intelligent decision about the belt speed will be taken by the ANN controller. ANN will control the alteration in speed in a way that gives the optimized energy efficiency through the conveyor belt motion. An optimal speed controlling mechanism of the conveyor belt is presented by detecting smartly the parts' number and weights using the vision sensor, where the latter will give sufficient visualization about the system. Then image processing will deliver the important data to ANN, which will optimally decide the best conveyor belt speed. This decided speed will achieve the aim of power saving in belt motion. The proposed controlling system will optimally switch the speed of the conveyor belt system to ON, OFF and idle status in order to minimize the consumption of energy in the conveyor belt. As the conveyor belt is fully loaded it moves at its maximum speed. But if the conveyor is partially loaded, the speed will be adjusted accordingly by the ANN. If no loading existed, the conveyor will be stopped. By this way, a very significant energy amount in addition to cost will be saved. The developed conveyor belt system will modernize industrial manufacturing lines, besides reducing energy consumption and cost and increasing the conveyor belts lifetime
