Design and Insights Gained in a Real-World Laboratory for the Implementation of New Coastal Protection Strategies

Abstract: Novel strategies in coastal protection are needed to cope with climate change-induced sea level rise. They aim at the sustainable development of coastal areas in light of intensification and land use changes. A promising approach is the design of nature-based solutions (NbS), complementing the safety levels of technical infrastructure. However, NbS lack a widespread and large-scale implementation. To address this deficit, co-design concepts are needed that combine experiences from science and practice. This wo… Show more

“…These are characterized by the fact that the experimental setting itself, i.e., design, implementation, evaluation, and exploitation, is open to social participation and is therefore always depending on the process. Thus, the main common problem, in Living Labs or other forms of social participation processes, is the transferability of the results [47]. What differs is the goal or the objective.…”

“…Sustainable adaptation [27], subjective well-being [28], and research around this field primarily rely on hermeneutics principles. However, spatial planning requires a clear planning scheme after understanding space users' intentions and is a practical translation based on the research results of hermeneutics [29]. To support this translation, hermeneutics should give externalization measurable data as the research result.…”
