Design and Installation of a New Electron Cyclotron Emission Diagnostic Antenna in LHD

Abstract: A new electron cyclotron emission (ECE) antenna was designed and installed outside of torus, when the heating and diagnostics systems were reconfigured in LHD. Its design is based on Gaussian beam optics and consists of two plane and two concave mirrors. The mirror surfaces are defined using the concept of constant phase to improve matching to the corrugated waveguide. The new ECE antenna was used in a 2010 experiment to measure the electron temperature profile and its fluctuations.

“…The results of the SX fluctuation profile are inadequate to specify the location of the fluctuation. In this paper, the characteristics of the mode are investigated using the magnetic probe, SX and electron cyclotron emission (ECE) [5] for identifying the measurement location. In addition, the comparison between the sensitivity of MP and ECE is reported.…”

“…After passing the high/low pass filter, the RF:ECE is downconverted to the lower side band (LSB)/upper side band (USB) intermediate frequency (IF) of up to 20 GHz by mixing with a proper coherent local oscillator (LO). In a conventional filter bank radiometer system, the generated IF is selected by the bandpass filter [3]. In the case of the filter bank system in LHD, the band width is 1 GHz, which corresponds to 2 cm spatial resolution in the radial direction.…”
