SummaryThis article describes a generalized single‐phase multiwinding step‐up transformer‐based multilevel converter with optimized device count. The proposed topology comprises of a single dc source, eight switches (four unidirectional and four bidirectional) and a single high‐frequency multiwinding transformer. Phase disposition pulse width modulation (PDPWM) is used for the level creation. The proposed converter is examined qualitatively and quantitatively using the total number of transformers, PWM control method, switch count, voltage stress, and the number of gate drivers, all of which are favorable. All elements of transformer selection, winding requirements, and comparative study have been thoroughly examined. A thorough Lagrange multiplier method has been applied to minimize the copper losses and optimize the multiwinding transformer (MWT) winding. The proposed converter simulations are performed using the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment. Further, the validation of the result is confirmed by a hardware setup of 0.9 kW.
