Design and Off-Design Analysis of a MW Hybrid System Based on Rolls-Royce Integrated Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract: In this paper the design point definition of a pressurised hybrid system based on the Rolls-Royce Integrated Planar-Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IP-SOFCs) is presented and discussed. The hybrid system size is about 2 MWe and the design point analysis has been carried out using two different IP-SOFC models developed by Thermochemical Power Group (TPG) at the University of Genoa: (i) a generic one, where the transport and balance equations of the mass, energy and electrical charges are solved in a lumped volume at co… Show more

“…The fuel cell (FC) based electric power generation systems, such as auxiliary power units (APUs) for diesel trucks and military remote power supplies, offer both portability and high energy efficiency, and they have been intensively studied in the past decade. 1 Recently, the high power FCs were developed for the non-transport applications as well, ranging from the kilowatt 2 to the megawatt 3 systems. The intensively developed FC technologies constitute the basis of the future energy-efficient and environmentally benign ''hydrogen economy''.…”

“…Figure 5 shows the schematic of a monolith and an HPD SOFC. Rolls-Royce (now LG) has developed an integrated planar SOFC design using a multi-cell MEA concept (Figure 6) [45], which takes advantage of both excellent thermal expansion compliances from tubular design and low-cost component fabrication from the planar configuration. For instance, a new symmetrically bi-electrode supported cell (BSC) was designed by Cable and Sophie by employing an approach known as the freeze tape casting method [46].…”

“…The fuel cell developed by Ceres Power is a unique adaptation of the SOFC technology, which uses a new generation of metal supported ceramic cells. This type of fuel cell invented by the Imperial team is particularly well suited to operation with hydrocarbon fuels such as natural gas [45,46,48]. These properties mean that the fuel cells can run at substantially lower temperatures than conventional designs.…”

“…In prototype and pilot-scale plants, normally the SOFC generates most of the power, working with fairly high fuel utilization and high stack efficiency. For example, Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Systems (now LG Fuel Cell Systems) presented in 2007 a 2 MW system prototype where the SOFC produced 4 times the power of the gas turbine [15]. Siemens' hybrid system featured a 180 kW SOFC coupled with a 40 kW micro gas turbine [16].…”
