Design and optimization of a highly efficient optical multipass system forγ-ray beam production from electron laser beam Compton scattering

Abstract: A new kind of nonresonant optical recirculator, dedicated to the production of γ rays by means of Compton backscattering, is described. This novel instrument, inspired by optical multipass systems, has its design focused on high flux and very small spectral bandwidth of the γ-ray beam. It has been developed to fulfill the project specifications of the European Extreme Light Infrastructure "Nuclear Pillar," i.e., the Gamma Beam System. Our system allows a single high power laser pulse to recirculate 32 times sy… Show more

“…Magnitude (upper plots) and phase advance per cell (bottom plots) of the prototype accelerating structure before (a) and after (b) tuning. 2 In the field measurement, it is possible to note that the measured field immediately after the output coupler does not go to zero, as expected. This is due to the fact that the field measurement in each point is obtained by subtracting the perturbed S 11 (with the bead in) and the unperturbed one (bead out).…”

“…It will deliver photons with energies ranging from 0.2 MeV to 20 MeV with an excellent spectral density of photons reaching 5000 ph/(s ⋅ eV) at 2 MeV and 10 MeV and the photon bandwidth ≤0.5% needed for the NRF experiments7. It was chosen to implement a linac with an optical circulator36 instead of an electron ring and a FPC. In this case, using a FPC in burst mode is also a possible solution.…”

“…The reference electron beams for various working points and the nominal laser parameters and interaction conditions [30] have been used (see Table I). In particular, in our calculations, the laser is considered 100% polarized [40]. Since, however, the expected laser polarization at ELI-NP is higher than 98%, the effective polarization figures reported in graphs and tables should be normalized by this factor.…”
