In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the significant challenges posed by Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and the need for innovative solutions to improve the quality of life for affected individuals. As AD prevalence continues to rise, technological advancements offer promising opportunities to address the multifaceted needs of patients and caregivers. This survey paper thoroughly investigates technological innovations in AD care, offering valuable insights into cutting-edge approaches that have the potential to positively impact the lives of affected individuals. By providing a holistic view of available assistive solutions, we review 2459 papers and select 46 relevant studies published between 2015 and 2023, specifically focusing on healthcare technologies and solutions, and utilized sensing methods. The former will include Telemedicine, E-Health, Smart Environment, Internet of Things (IoT), Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), and Personalized Assistive Solutions (PAS), while the latter encompasses Wearable/Environmental, Radio/Audio, Video/Image, and Digital Platforms. Our comparative assessment of recent survey papers reveals the unique contribution of this study, as it comprehensively examines the intersection of multiple parameters. The upward trend in the percentage of the population older than 65 has made smart aging more relevant than ever before. Growing old in a traditional assisted living facility can take a toll on the mental well-being of the elderly individual, on top of other factors like extravagant costs, potential negligence from caregivers, and a ceaseless demand for healthcare personnel. Aging in one’s own space instead of a senior residence is the desirable alternative thanks to enabling technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT facilitates connected healthcare, safety, entertainment, and social well-being of the older population. However, it suffers from a multitude of security vulnerabilities. Although researchers have investigated the security challenges of several IoT ecosystems, IoT systems in the context of smart aging care have not been well studied from a security perspective. In this paper, we present an in-depth analysis of smart aging care system security issues. A smart aging care system is essentially a superset of smart homes and healthcare monitoring systems. The sheer variety of technologies at play and the amount of data generated, combined with physical vulnerabilities and a lack of technological exposure of the intended occupant group put smart aging care systems at great risk. Attacks against relatively benign smart home devices can bring serious consequences because of the context in which these devices are employed. Thus, the purpose of our study is four-fold: (i) defining the components and functionalities of a smart aging care system, (ii) identifying security vulnerabilities and outlining suitable countermeasures for them, (iii) analyzing how the attacks uniquely impact senior users’ Quality of Life (QoL), (iv) highlighting avenues for future research and how the threat landscape in smart aging care systems differ from general smart homes.

Technologies for monitoring patients with Alzheimer’s disease: A systematic mapping study and taxonomy

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is an incurable disease and a type of dementia. About 55 million people around the world have AD. However, technologies have been used to assist in the healthcare of AD, supporting physicians in the palliative care of patients. This article presents a systematic mapping study (SMS) to identify articles that use technologies to monitor patients with AD in order to show an overview of the literature, identifying gaps and research opportunities in this field. The scientific contribution of this work is to identify monitoring technologies related to AD and highlight current trends on the subject. The paper uses the term technologies as hardware infrastructure and devices or systems without considering software technologies. In addition, this article proposes a taxonomy for the domain of technologies applied to AD patients. The SMS study was conducted in six databases, including articles from 1997 to 2021. An initial search resulted in 7,781 articles. After applying filter criteria, throwing automatic selection on databases, and manual assortment, 171 articles were selected. Subsequently, a second search was performed to reduce the list of articles and filter by the specific search objective of articles focused on technologies for monitoring with tracking, resulting in 74 works. The main results obtained are: (1) a relevant number of articles (43.42%) reported solutions used in sensor-based devices; (2) several works (33.33%) have the interaction focus on Position/Distance/Proximity/Location sensor type; (3) another group of articles has a secondary focus on Emergency help (18.97%). The results indicated the need for technologies to help caregivers monitor patients, in addition to evidence of research opportunities in palliative care and support for the daily activities of AD patients.
