Design and test of a software defined hybrid network architecture

Abstract: Circuit and packet switching convergence offers significant advantages in core networks to exploit their complementary characteristics in terms of flexibility, scalability and quality of service. This paper considers the possibility of unifying the two different types of transport using the Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach. The proposed architecture applies a modular design to the whole set of node functions, representing the key enabler for a fully programmable network implementation. This paper als… Show more

“…Cerroni et al [187] have further developed the concept of unifying circuit-and packet-switching networks with Open-Flow, which was initiated by Das et al [182], [183]. The unification is accomplished with SDN on the network layer and can be used in core networks.…”

“…The unification is accomplished with SDN on the network layer and can be used in core networks. Specifically, Cerroni et al [187] have described an extension of the OpenFlow flow concept to support hybrid networks. OpenFlow message format extensions to include matching rules and flow entries have also been provided.…”

“…An independent testing of OpenFlow in circuit and packet switching was also conducted. The authors in [34], designed the OpenFlow enabled hybrid network architecture. They extended the OpenFlow table matching rule entry by introducing two additional tuples, i.e., Channel and Transport class for wavelength/timeslot and guaranteed circuit/packet switching respectively.…”
