Design and Test of a New Type of Overrunning Clutch

Abstract: The overrunning clutch, or freewheel, is a kind of universal part with a one-way drive character, and is widely used in machinery. Typical roller overrunning clutches and sprag overrunning clutches have shortcomings such as low load bearing capacity, low torsional stiffness, and short life. For these reasons, studies on high-performance overrunning clutches have always been the focus of researchers. In this paper, a new type of double arc sprag overrunning clutch is proposed that overcomes the disadvantages of… Show more

“…In [9] it is shown that using sprag-type clutches with heterogeneous wedges instead of rollers provides significant structure simplification. The latest research [10][11][12][13][14][15] directed to improve its characteristics despite well-studied disadvantages [16][17][18][19][20] that have their source in the friction energy transfer principle.…”

“…Ma et al [16] improved the clutch engagement failure problem by adjusting the spring parameters, ignoring the influence of wedge design on the engagement process. Xue et al [17] proposed a new double-arc sprag overrunning clutch, which overcomes the disadvantages of poor transmission capacity and low torsional rigidity of transmission devices but lacks quantitative analysis between contact stress and fatigue life. Liu et al [18] evaluated the differential engagement time and impact load of a high-speed oblique-braced clutch, which can provide a reference for the impact load estimation of similar clutches.…”
