Design-Based Research

Abstract: Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPCK) represents the teachers' professional knowledge needed to integrate technology in education. Following a design-based approach this study describes the strategies for designing and assessing an in-service science teacher education course. Data was obtained through interviews, questionnaires, using participant observation and analysis of in-service science teachers' professional portfolios.A detailed description of the research methodology and findings is given… Show more

“…For example, developments in scholarship, increasingly prominent over the last decade, seek a different conception of the relationship between researcher and the "researched." In "design research" and "engaged scholarship," for example, practitioners in field sites become coresearchers, at the same time that academics roll up their sleeves and help them develop solutions to problems of practice, which the collaborators will both implement and study (Anderson & Shattuck, 2012;Peterson, 2009;Van de Ven, 2007). In such instances, research and intervention are combined, with each party engaged in both.…”

“…It is a long-term approach, wherein practitioners and researchers collaborate to design a solution to a complex educational problem, which is evaluated through multiple iterations of implementation. EDR is a new and evolving methodological framework that is becoming popular within the academy (Anderson & Shattuck, 2012). It can however, give rise to complex research designs involving multiple data sources.…”

“…Whilst generation of DPs may contribute to the body of knowledge and development of related theories, much of the EDR conducted to date has described "small-scale interventions", where it is "unclear if the results achieved are meeting the challenge of promoting widespread adoption of the tested interventions" (Anderson & Shattuck, 2012;p. 24).…”
