Design, Fabrication, and Testing of a Membrane Piezoelectric Tactile Sensor with Four Sensing Elements

Abstract: We presented design, fabrication, and testing of a novel membrane tactile sensing system with only four sensing elements. By using membrane stress combined with triangulation approach, it was possible to overcome the problems such as cross-talk between sensing elements, fragility, and complexity. The fabrication of the sensing elements performed using photolithographic and etching techniques. Position, orientation, and magnitude of applied loads through various flat shaped probes can be determined, by using on… Show more

“…In model b, the diameter of tumor is 10 mm, in model c the wall thickness and internal diameter of artery are 8 mm and 1 mm, respectively, and in model d the stenosis thickness is 1 mm. Tissue, artery, and stenosis components were assumed elastic and isotropic material with a modulus of elasticity of 15, 300, and 600 kPa, respectively [18,24,25] . The modulus of elasticity of tissue has been assumed 20 times larger than tissue [18] .…”

“…In this kind of operative procedure and unlike open surgeries, the surgeons cannot use their hands directly in manipulating the operation site. In other words, they do not have their hands inside the patient's body [6][7][8][9] . This means that various medical manipulations are not being performed in the operation sites.…”

“…Other researchers have reported issues such as cross-talk between sensing elements, fragility, and complexity, but so far not many practical methods have been suggested to handle these liabilities [8] . To approach this and following our previous work on the design and manufacturing of a tactile sensor with only four sensing elements, we are now proposing a novel system for detecting the orientation of a sensed object [7] . In short, FEM is being employed to predict the details of the tactile system.…”
