Design, Implementation, and Testing of Advanced Virtual Coordinate-Measuring Machines

Abstract: Advanced virtual coordinate-measuring machines (CMMs) (AVCMMs) have recently been developed at Brunel University, which provide vivid graphical representation and powerful simulation of CMM operations, together with Monte-Carlo-based uncertainty evaluation. In an integrated virtual environment, the user can plan an inspection strategy for a given task, carry out virtual measurements, and evaluate the uncertainty associated with the measurement results, all without the need of using a physical machine. The obta… Show more

“…The operator uses a hand-held haptic device to input the measurement points and a collision-free inspection path is generated. Based on the previous work, Wang et al [33] attempted to address the sub-task of probe head accessibility with the aid of a haptic CMM while a capability for calculating associated uncertainties was added by Hu et al [34]. An "augmented virtuality" integrated CMM was proposed [35] which is operated either by a marker-less gesture recognition algorithm or using two joysticks.…”

“…Hoy en día existe suficiente oferta de digitalizadores 3D en el mercado, y al mismo tiempo, nuevas tecnologías emergen implementando mejores dispositivos, abaratando componentes y optimizando cálculos. Las limitaciones de algunos sistemas han sido objeto de investigaciones 1,2,3 . Aunque la implementación de la digitalización 3D ha llegado completamente a los trenes productivos 4,5,6 a partir de máquinas de coordenadas, en el caso de México no han penetrado significativamente su mercado.…”

“…Based on a Monte Carlo method, multiple virtual measurements are performed in order to determine the measurement uncertainty. Digital twins of coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) have been extensively researched in the past [ 6 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]; however, research into digital twins of optical systems is still lacking due to the high number of error contributors [ 17 ]. This paper presents a method to obtain and simulate a digital twin of a laser line scanner (LLS) mounted on a CMM.…”
