Design, Manufacture and Measurements of Permanent Quadrupole Magnets for Linac4

Abstract: Compact quadrupole magnets are required for the CCDTL (Cell-Coupled Drift Tube Linac) of Linac 4, a 160 MeV linear accelerator of negative hydrogen ions which will replace the old 50 MeV proton Linac2 at CERN.The magnets, of an overall physical length of 140 mm and an aperture diameter of 45 mm, are based on Sm2Co17 blocks and can provide an integrated gradient of up to 1.6 Tesla. The magnetic field quality is determined by 4 ferromagnetic pole tips, aligned together with the permanent magnets blocks inside a … Show more

“…Properties of water cooling circuits are provided in Table 8. 3 Finally, we remark that coils are submitted to forces: their own weight and the electromagnetic forces produced by the interaction between magnetic field and current. Cooling flow 1 kcal = 4186 J increases the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1 • C. Q is the cooling flow, P the dissipated power, T the allowed temperature drop increase Q liter min ∼ 14.3 P [kW] ΔT [K] Water velocity Q = vA, where Q is the flow, v the water velocity and A the section of the pipe.…”

“…Therefore, by varying the current in the correction coils and the position of the end tubes, the integrated field strength can be tuned to a considerable amount. The movement of the end tube is simpler compared to the movement of the magnet blocks or the magnet poles, reported earlier [12,13]. The advantages of this scheme are that it is easy to implement, the magnetic axis will not shift, and it will prevent interference with nearby devices by restricting the fringe field.…”

“…A compact QP with a field tunability of 20% for the cellcoupled drift tube linac for Linac 4 at CERN was reported in Ref. [13]. The typical length, bore radius, and integrated QP field strength were 140 mm, 22.5 mm, and 1.6 T, respectively.…”

“…Several permanent magnet quadrupoles have been designed and built previously [3]- [9]. Often these have been fixed gradient magnets or magnets with only small adjustability.…”
