Design of a 3D Top-Loaded Low-Profile Sleeve Antenna for UAV Applications

Abstract: In this article, a 3D top-loaded low profile sleeve antenna for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications is proposed. By loading a 3D disc cone structure on the top of a sleeve antenna, the overall height of the antenna can be significantly reduced compared with the height of a traditional quarter-wavelength monopole antenna. In addition, adding shorted columns between the top plate of the disc cone and the ground can generate a new resonant point at lower frequency, so that the frequency bandwidth can be ef… Show more

“…In addition, antennas used in UAVs application needs to possess vertical polarization and horizontal omnidirectional radiation pattern to ensure communication with ground controllers. [5][6][7] Considering the constraint of the loading and the requirement of the aerodynamics of UAVs, antennas applied to UAVs need to be lightweight, low-profile, and small in lateral size. Many low-profile vertically polarized antennas have been published.…”

“…Dual‐frequency antennas mounted on UAVs ensure that UAVs serve complex communication systems, 4 such as transceiver duplex scenarios. In addition, antennas used in UAVs application needs to possess vertical polarization and horizontal omnidirectional radiation pattern to ensure communication with ground controllers 5–7 . Considering the constraint of the loading and the requirement of the aerodynamics of UAVs, antennas applied to UAVs need to be lightweight, low‐profile, and small in lateral size.…”
