Design of a Bethe‐hole directional coupler using substrate integrated waveguide technique

Abstract: design the feeding network, the proposed array antenna can achieve a quite compact size to be easily integrated within the WLAN/RFID systems as a transmitting antenna. With the help of such miniaturized feeding network, the array is capable of broadening the operating bandwidth for practical application so that the effect due to the frequency shifting caused by the transmitter casing can be better solved. Compared to previous series-fed array designs, the proposed structure can not only possess an even more co… Show more

“…Simple structure, easy to installation of SIW board, wideband (48%), low deviation (±0.5 dB) and high coupling are the advantage of the proposed coupler compare with the references which are presented in literature. Comparison between the proposed waveguide to SIW coupler and state of the arts works is shown in Table 1 which clearly proves its significantly larger bandwidth rather than 6,10,11 . Moreover its coupling is 8 dB lower than 11 (as the best case).…”

“…A high power wideband coaxial to coplanar directional coupler is proposed in 3 which has a 5 dB fluctuation in the beginning of its operation frequency band. By using SIW technology some novel SIW couplers have been proposed in recent years 4–6 . Ease of fabrication, ease of integration with other circuits and low cost compare with the waveguide couplers are the main advantage of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) couplers.…”

“…The beth-hole SIW coupler was designed and reported in Amine et al (2011), and since multi-hole couplers have a larger bandwidth, the theory of multi-hole waveguide couplers was been used in the SIW technology in that study to realize a broadband SIW coupler.…”

“…They are also noticed for 180º phase delay such as Narrow wall directional coupler [16] Half Mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide (HMSIW) for 180º phase delay [17], non-uniform width [18]. Furthermore, multi-layer SIW structures are attractive for directional coupler based on coupling from Bethe hole [19][20]. Apparently, in single layer SIW the Bethe hole made between two waveguide by the elimination of some vias.…”
