Design of a Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellation Network for Air Traffic Surveillance

Abstract: The satellite constellation with automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast on-board is of great importance for air traffic surveillance due to its multiple advantages compared with traditional methods. Although some research has been conducted on satellite constellation design based on coverage performance, the findings cannot entirely satisfy all the requirements of air traffic surveillance owing to the lack of analysis on inter-satellite links and network transmission. This paper presents a novel design of … Show more

“…In the analysis of mega-constellation topologies, commonly employed methods include optimal topology planning, integer linear programming, ant colony algorithms, and random graphs [8,9]. However, these methods tend to be effective only for smaller constellations; when addressing the topology design challenges inherent in megaconstellations, they encounter significant obstacles, such as substantial computational overhead and susceptibility to becoming trapped in local optima.…”

“…This effectively reduces the number of inter-satellite links, enhancing the system's implementability and reliability. However, it does not take into account the limitations of laser communication in inter-satellite links, such as signal attenuation issues [8].…”

“…The satellite-to-ground coverage domain refers to the total area on the ground that a satellite can observe at a given moment, and its range is typically determined by the elevation angle of the ground station. According to the literature [12][13][14][15] , when the minimum elevation angle of the satellite coverage is σmin, the spherical radius of the coverage cap c r is calculated as follows: max min min (arccos(cos ) ) A is given by: 2 2…”

“…Especially in Nanosats and CubeSats networking, multiple small satellites can be used to form a constellation, as shown in Fig. 1 , to realize the function of a large satellite 1 – 3 . For example, the characteristics of mobile communication satellite constellations in the mid-orbit zone are studied in 1 , and 10 constellation networking schemes are proposed, which can provide mobile communication services for more than 85% of people in the world.…”
