Design of a Plant Leaf Area Meter Using PV Cell and Embedded Microcontroller

Abstract: This paper presents the development of a solar cell based simple and practical leaf area meter. The system has a silicon solar module which is composed of 6 series connected cells, a light source, and a parabolic reflector with opal glass for diffusing the light. Partial shading effect on PV cell's voltage and current are evaluated with different geometrical shapes for testing the performance of the model, and the resulting equations for voltage and current changes with respect to measured areas are obtained. … Show more

“…In principle, both these studies conducted measurement by utilizing the resulting voltage and current measurements via a voltage and current measuring unit. Finally, the leaf area measurements were confirmed by comparing the results with measurements of grid counting method [9]. Another study in [10], the single leaf area could be computed easily based on the counting of the leaf pixels in digital leaf image.…”

“…They used several components namely a PV panel as sensor, a wooden cabinet as enclosure, a flashlight as light source, and a digital multimeter for voltage measurement. A Study in [9] presented the development of simple and practical leaf area meter based on a solar cell. “…S2 ). Leaf area was measured by LI-3100C-Leaf Area Meter ( Engin & Engin, 2013 ) using 03 randomly selected leaves from a 30-day-old plant and expressed as cm 2 . The principal component analysis (PCA) was performed using R program.…”

“…Some of the traditional methods used to measure the geometric parameters of plant leaves include direct measurements, grid counting methods [3], graph decomposition, and coefficient methods [4]. However, the desktop leaf area meter is not always available due to its expensive cost and high maintenance requirements, whereas the hand-held leaf area meter is complicated to operate with low precision [5]. In contrast, the image analysis method has the features of relatively simple operation, high accuracy, and low cost.…”
