Design of a Portable, Intrinsically Safe Multichannel Acquisition System for High-Resolution, Real-Time Processing HD-sEMG

Abstract: A compact and portable system for real-time, multichannel, HD-sEMG acquisition is presented. The device is based on a modular, multiboard approach for scalability and to optimize power consumption for battery operating mode. The proposed modular approach allows us to configure the number of sEMG channels from 64 to 424. A plastic-optical-fiber-based 10/100 Ethernet link is implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based board for real-time, safety data transmission toward a personal computer or lap… Show more

“…Skin was cleaned with abrasive paste prior to placing the electrodes. EMGs were detected with a multi-channel fixed gain amplifier (W-EMG amplifier, LISiN-Politecnico di Toino, Italy; [ 16 ]). Trigger pulses indicating the onset of stimulation pulses were digitised synchronously with EMGs at 2441 Samples/s (24 bit A/D converter).…”

“…It is also profitable to integrate the battery management function in FPGA to achieve compact, simple, and lower cost portable devices. Therefore, in this paper, a novel concept of incorporating all the functionality of smart battery management systems into the FPGA used by portable electronic devices is proposed [2].…”
