Design of a Practical and Compact mm-Wave MIMO System with Optimized Capacity and Phased Arrays

Abstract: In this paper we evaluate the feasibility of short range outdoor mm-wave MIMO links in the 70 GHz portion of the E-band (71-76 GHz). We use phased arrays in order to strongly reduce the impact of the multipath components, thus making the channel mainly line-of-sight (LOS). We design the array using a simple patch as a single element and simulate the performances for a 200 m link and a MIMO system with equal element spacing at the transmitter and the receiver. Each node of the MIMO system consists of a uniform … Show more

“…Exploring new frequency bands is crucial due to two main factors: the saturation of the existing spectra and the increasing data rates and numbers of users in the new generation networks. The millimeter-wave (mm-wave) band seems to be a promising candidate for the radio access in urban and crowded areas and for small cells coverage, thanks to new technologies that have enabled to design transceivers of good performance at this band (Niu et al, 2015;Heath et al, 2016;Al-Falahy et al, 2019;Cella et al, 2014). Mm-wave band shows high propagation loss, due to free space propagation loss given by FRIIS equation (Equation 1), atmospheric absorption, and blockage from buildings and other obstacles (Rappaport et al, 2017).…”

“…The basic properties of THz waves have been investigated in [11], and the availability of high-quality data for THz wireless links is obtained. In [12], an example link budget has been described. In [13], a close inspection of the characteristics of mmWave dispersion, channel designing, and suggestion of device such as structure and application of antenna device for mmWave including link budget of the system have been introduced into presence.…”
