Design of a Six-Port Junction Using Half-Mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide

Abstract: A six-port junction is designed using the newly proposed half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) technology. HMSIW origins from the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) and have the advantage of reduced size. In this structure, a HMSIW hybrid 3dB coupler and phase shifting element are designed as fundamental building blocks. A HMSIW six-port junction circuit operating at 11.5-13.5 GHz is designed. Full wave simulation results verify the design.

“…In Xu et al [2005], Moldovan et al [2006], and Cheng et al [2007] SIW phase shifters are presented, but the bandwidth is not very large. The same occurs for the HSIW presented in Chen et al [2007]. A broadband SIW phase shifter is presented in Cheng et al [2010], but at the expense of presenting a physical length larger than that of the reference line.…”

“…2. This scheme is the classical configuration of a six-port junction that has been already demonstrated in the SIW technology [6], [7] and evolved technologies [8], [9]. However, these works dealt with limited relative bandwidths of less than 20% since they were aimed for demonstration purposes or selective radar applications.…”

“…Figure 4(b) introduces positive phase shift by inserting additional metallic via fins into the transmission path. A positive phase shift element has been used for Ku-band six-port networks [8]. The additional metallic via fins introduced in the waveguide decrease the equivalent waveguide width, so the phase wavelength is enlarged.…”
