Design of a Smart Barrier to Internal Flooding

Abstract: Increasingly, and with greater frequency, humanity is experiencing violent weather storms, which cause innumerable human and economic losses. Among the most frequent climatic storms that cause considerable losses are floods. Usually, domestic anti-flood systems are not autonomous; they require human intervention. This article presents Smart Flood Barrier (SFB), which is a fully automated system using sensors and composed of hinged lintels that can be installed on any door of any commercial brand. SFB is respon… Show more

“…With the objective of designing a deflector capable of taking advantage of the great force of airflow that hits the front of a moving vehicle and transferring it to the rear of the vehicle, thus reducing fuel consumption, the present research has been structured in the following phases (Figure 2): (i) Phase I: design of the deflector; (ii) Phase II: aerodynamic simulations; (iii) Phase III: mechanical design and construction; and (iv) Phase IV: experimental tests. The methodology illustrated in Figure 2 is based on previous papers which followed similar methodologies for studying other inventions [35]. In the design phase of the deflector in 3D software (Phase I, Figure 2), the upper deflector was designed in Autocad 3D ® .…”

“…A paradigmatic example of a flood barrier is the MoSE system implemented in Venice, Italy, to avoid sea level increases, which lead to inundating the city streets, whose use can be partially reduced to guarantee maritime traffic [34]. The smart barrier system presented in [32] is not a unique solution in this direction. The use of an internet-of-things (IoT) based solution [35] is also described in [36], where a commercial device integrated with a communication network environment is described.…”
