Design of a turning cutting tool with large length–diameter ratio based on three-element type vibration absorber

Abstract: The vibration absorber has been effective in vibration control. From the demand of manufacturing structural parts with a deep hole, the design of a turning cutting tool with large length–diameter ratio is presented. An analytical approach of acquiring frequency response of primary structure equipped with typical single-degree-of-freedom vibration absorbers is formulated, and background modes are incorporated with the purpose of achieving an accurate tuning of vibration absorber. Specifically, the three-element… Show more

“…Kolluru et al 11 designed tuned viscoelastic dampers to minimize the vibration of thin-walled casings. Yang et al 12 applied the VA to the turning tool, and proposed a parameter optimization method considering the background modes. However, the application of single-DOF VA is restricted with its narrow vibration suppression bandwidth.…”

“…15 The turning system’s two degrees of freedom model can be used to investigate the effect of process damping on chatter amplitude and frequency changes occurring in the turning operations. 16 A three-element type of vibration absorber embedded in the cutting tool was presented by Yang et al 17 and achieved an 87.1% reduction in the amplitude of the target mode.…”

“…Traditionally, milling tool is regarded as flexible with respect to the workpiece. 1 Most researchers try to construct the stability lobe diagram (SLD) and then select optional machining parameters to ensure chatter-free operations. The regeneration phenomenon, which is the major cause of the milling chatter, is modeled mathematically by delay differential equation (DDE) with infinite dimensional state space, but its stability condition cannot be given analytically.…”
