Design of a Wide-Range Centrifugal Compressor Stage for Supercritical CO2 Power Cycles

Abstract: Supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycles require high compressor efficiency at both the design-point and over a wide operating range. Increasing the compressor efficiency and range helps maximize the power output of the cycle and allows operation over a broader range of transient and part-load operating conditions. For sCO2 cycles operating with compressor inlets near the critical point, large variations in fluid properties are possible with small changes in temperature or pressure. This leads to parti… Show more

“…Figure 5 shows the steady state CFD results at sCO2 conditions. These results show a good agreement with the CFD prediction from previous study [6], where leakage loss was estimated from a meanline calculation instead of including the actual hub and shroud cavity configuration into the 3D CFD model. A meanline volute loss was applied for both models based on [7].…”

“…Changes in Temperature [6] In addition to the range requirement for transient temperature changes, further stable operating range is required to ensure steady off-design operation corresponding to the cycle operating conditions that vary with daily and annual temperature variations. These considerations together with a desire to maintain 10% choke and surge margins during all operating conditions yielded a main compressor range requirement of 65%.…”

“…This is because radial turbines are capable of a higher specific speed. Radial turbines come in single and multi-stage arrangements, although multi-stage radial turbines have been studied and show to improve performance [38], [39], single-stage turbines significantly reduce turbine and power cycle complexity [40]. The requirements for rural districts are often much less than 10 MW and access to technical personnel is limited.…”
