Design of an advanced hot box-cold box with full climatic control to test heat, air and moisture transport through real scale building elements

Abstract: A versatile hot box-cold box test facility called HAMSTER enables to evaluate the energy and hygrothermal performance of up to 3m high, 3m wide and 3.6m deep building test elements including walls, flat or pitched roofs and floors. This equipment allows for the precise measurement of thermal performance according to standards. It also allows for the study of heat, air and moisture phenomena taking place in building elements under realistic climatic conditions including the effects of rain, sun or wind. Interio… Show more

“…To overcome these issues, laboratory measurements can come in handy, as it allows well-specified and controlled boundary conditions. From this perspective, within the HAMSTER project (2016-2022) a unique and versatile bi-climatic chamber, called HAMSTER, has been designed and built [5]. This paper first presents the HAMSTER test facility and its innovative features.…”

“…In order to execute well-specified experiments, with well-considered controlled boundary conditions, laboratory experiments are preferable. In this context, within the HAMSTER project (2016-2022) a unique and multifunctional hot box-cold box test facility has been designed [3] and built at the Buildwise laboratory in Brussels, Belgium.…”
