Design of an Electric Propulsion System for SCEPTOR’s Outboard Nacelle

Abstract: The rise of electric propulsion systems has pushed aircraft designers towards new and potentially transformative concepts. As part of this effort, NASA is leading the SCEPTOR program which aims at designing a fully electric distributed propulsion general aviation aircraft. This article highlights critical aspects of the design of SCEPTOR's propulsion system conceived at Joby Aviation in partnership with NASA, including motor electromagnetic design and optimization as well as cooling system integration. The mot… Show more

“…The custom Joby cruise motors and controllers are air-cooled, and a radial inlet ensures adequate cooling flow to the motor stator and magnets. Nacelle cooling design is discussed in a companion paper by Dubois et al [39]. Additional cooling flow is directed to the dual motor controllers located behind the motor.…”

“…Propulsion Technology Operations Research (SCEPTOR) program . The goal 9 of the program is to design a fully electric distributed propulsion general aviation aircraft which shows up to fivefold predicted efficiency improvement in the cruise mode Dubois et al, 2016). After evaluation of baseline airframe selection factors (e.g.…”

“…These effects may not fully counterbalance the benefits mentioned previously but are to be considered in the trade study. One alternative solution, also implemented in the SCEPTOR project 8,9 , consists in folding the small leading edge-mounted propellers not required for cruise propulsion. The split ratio between nacelle-mounted and leading edge-mounted propulsive power can also be optimized (Fig.…”
