Design of an experimental apparatus for measurement of the surface tension of metastable fluids

Abstract: Abstract.A unique experimental apparatus for measurement of the surface tension of aqueous mixtures has been designed, manufactured, and tested in our laboratory. The novelty of the setup is that it allows measurement of surface tension by two different methods: a modified capillary elevation method in a long vertical capillary tube and a method inspired by the approach of Hacker (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, Technical Note 2510, 1-20, 1951, i.e. in a short horizontal capillary tube. Functional… Show more

“…The surface tension of water under both stable and metastable supercooled state evaluated from equation (2) is shown in figure 8. Preliminary data agree relatively well with the IAPWS correlation (1) extrapolated to subzero temperatures and consequently also to our previous results obtained with the capillary elevation method [9,10]. The estimated standard combined uncertainty of the measured surface tension is approximately 1.5 times higher than for previous measurements (around ± 0.40 mN m -1 at -4 °C in [9]) as it increases from ± 0.59 mN m -1 at + 40 °C to ± 0.63 mN m -1 at 7 C −°.…”

“…This represents a significant improvement compared to our previous measurements performed with a standard cathetometer with an uncertainty of 0.040 mm. 16,29 The water-wetted material of all measuring capillary tubes was fused silica. Their inner diameter d was close to 0.32 mm; the accurate values and their uncertainties are discussed in the Results and Discussion section.…”

“…The reason is also the fact that the data by Hacker have relatively low scattering and good internal consistency. However, recent experiments performed with another technique based on the modified capillary rise method show that the surface tension of water does not show any anomaly at temperatures down to -26 °C [4][5][6]. The surface tension of supercooled water can be predicted by the IAPWS (International Association for Properties of Water and Steam) standard [6] extrapolated below 0.01 °C.…”
