Design of dual‐polarised (RHCP/LHCP) quad‐ridged horn antenna with wideband septum polariser waveguide feed

Abstract: This study was conducted to design a wideband septum polariser as a feeder of the antenna to generate right‐hand circular polarisation (RHCP) and left‐hand circular polarisation (LHCP) concurrently. The proposed septum polariser overcomes the conventional bandwidth limit and covers 40% bandwidth from 8 to 12 GHz. Moreover, a quad‐ridged horn is chosen as a radiator of the feeding network due to its waveguide structure, wide bandwidth, and dual polarisation. Therefore, the proposed structure consists of a quad‐… Show more

“…20 Due to its simple structure and excellent polarization conversion performance, the metal ridge septum got a lot of attention and this type of structure of metal ridge septum with different process technology and improved configuration was applied in design of CP antennas and dual CP antennas, and they all demonstrated excellent performance. 21,22 In order to realize directional radiation and eliminate polarization mismatch in broadband wireless communication system and reduce antenna design complexity, a broadband dual CP antenna with simple configuration is implemented by embedding a metal ridge septum with the shape of the cascade of a rectangle and a triangle into the square waveguide. The proposed dual CP antenna can be easily designed and optimized within the design bandwidth on account of the simple configuration and fewer design parameters than the step structure in Refs.…”

“…Besides that, circularly-polarized waves possess benefits of weather penetration and better mobility [12]. Antenna diversity techniques are generally used to increase the data capacity of wireless systems [13]- [15]. Direction based circular polarization diverse antenna in combination with mechanical rotator or digital control can be beneficial to receive two orthogonally polarized signals from different directions without crossover, using a single antenna, which leads to an increase in traffic handling capacity.…”

“…achieved within 10% of the bandwidth, but the aperture efficiency is only 34%. A dual CP antenna with 40% bandwidth operating in X-band based on septum polarizer with square waveguide is reported recently in [12] by employing a quadridged horn as the radiator. However, the isolation of its polarizer part is only 15 dB.…”
