Design of Electric Motors and Power Drive Systems According to Efficiency Standards

Abstract: The focus of this paper is the design of high efficiency electric motors adopted in power drive systems. The last efficiency standards are considered as constraint for the motor and drive design: they are introduced and described and their impact on the choice made during the design process are highlighted. As a particular case, the perspective of a motor manufacturer is adopted in order to understand which is the proper efficiency level of the motor required to fulfil the efficiency requirements of the power … Show more

“…However, this option may not be economically viable due to the incremental costs associated with the purchased motor and driver that feeds with a single to three‐phase power supply [11]. Both replacement options require an extensive amount of energy and materials to manufacture, resulting in a considerable environmental impact [12].…”

“…Therefore, the energy efficiency is of utmost importance, and the application of variable frequency drives should be able to provide it. Energy efficiency is rapidly becoming an imperative, also due to recent standards which may force the redesign of the electric machines [10]. In turn, the control technique plays a crucial role in the energy efficient operations of the electric drive.…”

“…Whenever a machine transforms energy from one form to another, and this combined with power quality disturbances in the electric grid yields an unavoidable loss in the equipment, it is normally manifest as an increase in the temperature and an efficiency reduction [8,9]. Therefore, since the electrical machines use a significant part of the total electric power generated worldwide and its performance impact directly in the productivity costs, any improvement in its operation and control that increases its efficiency will have a meaningful impact [10][11][12][13].…”
